Last Tuesday I needed a competitive analysis for a pitch deck. Not a deep 40-page teardown. The Analyst Agent takes the raw research and synthesizes it. Its instructions focus on identifying patterns, comparing data points, and flagging inconsistencies. Same model, no external tools. It works purely with the information the research agent provides.
The Writer Agent takes the analysis and produces a structured briefing. Clear sections, bullet points, executive summary at the top. Its instructions emphasize conciseness and actionability.
All three connect to a Team node set to "coordinator" mode. That means Agno's built-in coordinator handles the orchestration: it decides which agent to call, in what order, and how to combine their outputs. You don't have to write any routing logic.
Loading the template took about 15 seconds. I clicked "Templates" in the sidebar, selected "Research Team," and the canvas populated with all four nodes and their connections. Everything was pre-configured.
Now here's where I started customizing.
For my competitive analysis, I wanted the Research Agent to also have access to HackerNews tools (useful for sentiment and developer opinions on products) and Google Search as a backup to DuckDuckGo. That was two checkbox clicks in the ConfigPanel. Fifteen seconds.
I also changed the Writer Agent's instructions. The default instructions produce a general research brief, but I wanted a competitive analysis format: company overview, product positioning, pricing model, recent news, strengths, weaknesses. I typed a few sentences describing that format. Maybe 90 seconds.
I didn't change the models, the team mode, or the Analyst Agent's configuration. The defaults worked fine for what I needed.
Total configuration time: under 5 minutes. Probably closer to 3 if I hadn't paused to re-read the Writer Agent's instructions.
Then I opened the chat panel, typed "Analyze the competitive landscape for AI agent builder tools, focusing on Dify, Flowise, and LangFlow," and hit enter.
What actually happened when I ran it
The team coordinator kicked off the Research Agent first. I could see the reasoning steps streaming in real time: the agent searched DuckDuckGo for each competitor, pulled recent HackerNews threads, and compiled raw findings. This took about 45 seconds.
Then the coordinator handed everything to the Analyst Agent. It identified pricing differences, feature gaps, community size comparisons, and recent funding data. Another 30 seconds.
Finally, the Writer Agent produced a structured competitive brief. Company overviews. Feature matrices. Pricing comparisons. A summary section at the top with the three most important findings.
The whole execution took about two and a half minutes.
Was the output perfect? No. Here's what it got right and what it missed.
What worked well: The structure was clean and followed the format I specified. The factual information about each product was accurate. The pricing comparisons were current. The HackerNews sentiment analysis added context I wouldn't have thought to include manually, including a thread about Flowise's recent security vulnerability that was directly relevant to my pitch.
What needed editing: The "strengths and weaknesses" sections were too diplomatic. Every product was described as having "a growing community" and "active development." I wanted sharper analysis: where are the actual gaps? I ended up rewriting about 30% of those sections myself. The agent also missed some nuance about LangFlow's licensing changes that I knew about from personal experience.
This is an important honesty point. AI agents are excellent at gathering and structuring information. Where you'd want to customize beyond the template
The Research Team template is a solid starting point, but here's where I'd customize for different use cases.
For a deep industry analysis, I'd swap DuckDuckGo for Tavily or Exa search tools. These give you more control over search depth and source filtering. I'd also add a fourth agent dedicated to financial data using the YFinance tool, especially if the analysis involves public companies.
For an academic research brief, I'd replace the web search tools with ArXiv and PubMed tools. The Analyst Agent's instructions would need to shift from competitive analysis to literature review patterns: methodology comparison, finding consensus and disagreement, identifying research gaps.
For a recurring weekly briefing, I'd export the Python code and add a scheduling layer. The exported code is standalone, so wrapping it in a cron job or a simple FastAPI endpoint takes maybe 10 minutes of additional work. The visual builder gets you 90% of the way there; the last 10% is deployment-specific.
For production use with sensitive data, I'd review the exported code's API key handling. The template uses environment variables by default (which is correct), but you'll want to make sure your deployment environment has proper secrets management. The builder doesn't handle deployment security for you, and it shouldn't. That's infrastructure, not agent design.
One more thing worth mentioning. The coordinator team mode works well for sequential research workflows like this one. But if your agents need to work more collaboratively (say, debating different interpretations of the same data), you might want to switch to "collaborator" mode. That's a single dropdown change in the visual builder, but it fundamentally changes how the agents interact. I'd recommend testing both modes with your specific prompt to see which produces better results for your use case.
The bigger picture for product teams
I think the real value of visual agent building isn't the time savings on any single build. It's the iteration speed.
When I built the competitive analysis manually in Python, changing the team structure meant editing code, re-reading it to make sure nothing broke, and re-running.
